The History of the Bill Higson Memorial Races

Bill Higson was a well-liked and enthusiastic member of Reading Wheelers Cycling Club. The Son of Wheelers chairman Stan Higson (who led the club through to 1974 when it amalgamated to become Reading Cycling Club) Bill was a good all-rounder with success on both road and track including wins in the `Presidents 50` (1960 & `61) He always enjoyed the club Cyclo –Cross, called a `scramble` in those days, and usually ended up in the pond at Burgfield Common, complete with bike, for a post-race `dip`! Andy Hargroves from Hargroves Cycles eased to a comfortable win on a very muddy and tricky course from Michael Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) by over 30secs. The two riders had eased away from the rest of the field after one lap and the two extended their lead throughout the race. Report Rnd 5, GWR Team Swindon, 14th Oct 2012

After a race long tussle John Whittington (CNP Obrea) piped Paul Lloyd (Ride on Air) by a couple of seconds at the Supermarine Rugby club venue in Swindon. Once the race got underway these two riders along with Ian Legg (Primera/ Specialized) eased away from the rest of the chasing bunch. Inter-Area Championships

Inter-Area Championships It’s early October and that can only mean one thing, time to think about Inter Area Team Champs. They are to be held at Milton Keynes Bowl, Milton Keynes on Sunday 11th November. There are separate races for Youth, Vets, Women and a joint Senior/Junior one. We are interested in putting in teams from Wessex in as many of the categories as we can if you are interested let me know, we need at least 4 riders for each race with the best 3 counting for the team prize. Michael Cotty (Wheelbase / Cannondale) took the honours at the new event held on the old golf course in Eastleigh in Hampshire. Michael set a fast pace at the start and soon had a clear minute lead over new team mate Richard Phillips-Scofield. A lovely autumnal morning greeted the riders and supporters as they arrived at the new venue and they were treated to some fast exciting races throughout the groups. Steve James led home a Hargroves Cycles 1-2-3 in today’s race in Wareham Forest Dorset. A quartet of red and yellow soon opened out a lead over the rest of the field as junior rider Matt Hargroves chose to ride the senior race in support of Stuart Bowers and Matt Macdonald.
