SPAM Winter Challenge, 30th Dec 2012
On Sunday 30th December the Salisbury Plain Area Mountain Bikers (SPAM) will again be putting on the popular Winter Challenge. Starting from Erlestoke near Devizes the ride uses the hard pack trails over Salisbury Plain. The route is not too technical so can be ridden on a cyclo-cross bike. Route options include 50km, 35km or 25km. This event normally attracts a large entry and is a fun non-competitive event for the winter holiday week. The Inter Area Championships were held at the Milton Keynes Bowl is bright sunny conditions. Well done to Abbie Manley and Madeline Cooper on their wins at the Inter Regional Championships today at Milton Keynes in the supporting Unders 12s races. 1st Madeline Cooper U10G 1st Abbie Manley U12G In the Veterans race Sean Williams had an excellent ride to finish 10th overall and lead Wessex to a commendable fourth place in the team competition. On Sunday 11th November the Inter-Area Championships will take place at the Milton Keynes Bowl. The Wessex region is sending a strong team and will be hoping to finish on the podium, so good luck to all who are representing the region on Sunday. Following and night of very heavy rain the course which was pan flat around a couple of football pitches and a small wooded copse was waterlogged. The course soon cut up badly during the earlier races as the rain continued but it did ease a little for the start of the senior race. It was very cold which didn’t help riders and the added ditch with six inches of running water was compounded their misery on each lap. Helpers Required for National Trophy
As you are aware we are again promoting a Round of the Cyclo Cross National Trophy Series on Sunday 18th November 2012, and just about everything is now in place for another successful event. The one thing we have left to do is gather up all the volunteers for course building on the Saturday and Marshalling on the Sunday, I am looking for about 8 Course Builders and 20 Marshalls. Round seven of the league saw the riders and supporters at the Rutherford Appleton Labs on the side of the hill side surrounding the establishment, with the event promoted by Swindon Road Club. After the overnight wind and rain the chalky ground was firm and very fast and despite a small shower during the youth race the top surface wasn’t too slippery, and it was chilly on the exposed hill side.
