Report Rnd 2, Swindon RC, 23rd Sept 2012

 Luke Gray (Trek Cross Collective) went one better than last week and won round two at the very wet and slippery cross race held in Swindon. Luke was in a group that got away and the start and these five stayed away for much of the race before the conditions decided the outcome. One the first lap it was Jody Crawforth and teammate Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) along with Michael Cotty (Wheelbase Cannondale), Ben Sumner (Beeline Cycles), Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) and Will Bjergfelt (Cycle Premier Kovert) that started to ease away. Salisbury Saxon CX Sportif

The weekend of 10th/11th November doesn’t have a Wessex League race on the calendar as the weekend is reserved for the Inter-Area Championships at Milton Keynes. On Sunday 11th November CX Sportif are organising an off-road sportif using roads, trails and byways around Salisbury.  Various routes are on offer 80km, 60km and 40km. For those not riding the Inter-Area Championships but looking for a local race or event this cyclo-cross orientated sportif may be an interesting option. GWR Team will be again staging their evening floodlit cyclo-cross race series at the Supermarine Club in Swindon. Report Round 1, Oxonian CC, 15th Sept 2012

  Ben Sumner (Beeline Cycles) won the first round of the Wessex League at Oxonian’s event at Cowley to the west of Oxford. Ben out sprinted Luke Gray (Trek Cross Collective) by a second on the line to win the league opener. The event was held within the ground of the Oxford Spires Academy on terraced football pitches which provided the climbs and a very narrow technical wooded section to the north of the school. Cotswold Veldrijden Team Launch

A new bicycle racing club “Cotswold Veldrijden” has been started covering the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire area, team members will concentrate on cyclocross racing in the Wessex and National League series but as cyclocross is seasonal, riders will also compete in road and circuit racing, time trials and mountain bike events. (Veldrijden being the Flemish word for cyclocross). Cyclocross started in the mid 20th century as a winter training discipline and has grown into a major sport with thousands of followers in Belgium, the Netherlands and other parts of Europe.
