Race Report – Round #5, Bill Higson Memorial Cyclocross, Reading

PedalOn rider Adrian Lansley led home team mates Sam Allen and Jamie Norfolk for a podium lockout for the Tadley based team. Riding for the entire race nose to tail Lansley and Allen had the race by the scruff after the first lap, whilst Norfolk had to fight his way through from seventh place after the initial lap.

The latest round of the league took part at the Prospect Park venue just to the west of Reading, local club Reading CC promoted the event on a very technical course. With little rain over the last week the venue was dry and rode very quickly and consisted of a grassed park land and some technical sections through two wooded sections.

With the PedalOn duo getting away quickly it was left for the rest to give chase. The chasers on the opening lap included Alex Forrester (Zepnat.com), Tom Budden (Sotonia CC) and Joe Hickerton (Spokes BPC Racing). Norfolk was picking of places in the first two laps and by the third lap was only 13secs down on the leaders. As the laps ticked away and the podium places set it was clear there was to be no changes and riders to the most held position to the finish line. The nature of the course meant there were limited passing places and it suited all sorts of riding styles. In the final stages of the race Lansley managed to get a gap over Allen which was all he needed to take the win.

In the vet50+ GS Vecchi rider Kevin Holloway wasted no time in making the course his own as the quickly built up a strong lead leaving all in his wake. By half way Holloway was already 30secs up on a chasing Gary Barlow (Reading CC) and an even larger gap to third place Mike Williams (Fareham Wheelers).

Helen Pattinson (Hargroves Ridley Montezuma’s) followed up last week’s podium at the Derby National Trophy race won the combined women’s race but she was closely followed by a quartet of team mates. In the early stages of the race junior Abbie Manley led team mates Amy Perryman and sister Kara whilst Pattinson was waiting her time. Riding well within the Hargroves Ridley Montezuma’s train was Alderney Baker (Team Empella) along with visiting rider Clare Ross (Brixton CC) who caught everyone out by winning the senior race. The course parcour meant there were many gaps throughout the race and with three different groups there were limited opportunity to see riders racing together.

The combined vet40+ and junior race saw a win for Callum Macleod (PedalOn), the junior rider quickly got a gap on the opening lap which in turn allowed him to control the race through the technical sections. The local rider was finding the punchy climbs tricky which allowed the chasing duo of Dan Guest (Cotswold Veldrijden) and Barney Clacy (Hargroves Ridley Montezuma’s) to hold station for the most. The winner of the first four rounds Paul Lloyd was feeling the effects of a lot of racing in his legs from the week and once he slipped coming into a downhill of camber turn he was unable to close the leaders down. Guest took the vet race win to close the gap to Lloyd but with mid week racing finished and no race next weekend all the riders will be back stronger at the next round at Winchester.
