Report Round 10, Didcot

Today’s race was held at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory research establishment a leader in particle physics research and promoted by the Didcot Phoenix CC. Despite heavy overnight rain and winds the chalk based venue held up really well. The course made its way around the field and then onto a climb which took the riders up above Harwell before a steep descent brought some back to earth with a bump.

PedalOn rider Adrian Lansley once again leaves all in his wake as he produces another dominating performance winning the latest round in South Oxfordshire. Lansley was challenged in the first couple of laps by Will Lewis (High Peak Cycles RT) but he slipped away towards the end.

After a tarmac run out to sort the riders out they turned onto the grass banks for the first time before heading out to the big climb. Jamie Norfolk and Sam Allen (PedalOn) led the charge away with Lansley tucked up close. After the first full lap shuffle Lansley came into the finish chute with Will Lewis right on his wheel. Next up but already beginning to losing valuable seconds were Michael Cotty (Col Collective), Joe Hickerton (Eden Veranda RT) and Sam Allen.

By the second lap the two leaders had a 13sec gap, and by lap three Lansley had started to distance Lewis and the chasing riders as gaps started to appear all over the course. On lap four Lewis dropped more time to Lansley as he must of had a problem out of sight. He rode into the pits to collect a spare bike and then set about closing down the gap to Lansley.

At the mid race distance Lansley had a lead of 10secs over Lewis but again by the end of the lap his lead had extended to 30secs. Hickerton looked safe in third but nearly a minute down, followed by Cotty and Allen who were locked together. Tom Sewell (Cotswold Veldrijden) was riding within himself and this paid off at the end as he managed to pass Allen on the last lap.

So at the chequered flag Lansley recorded his seventh win from seven starts, Lewis was second 33secs down and Hickerton completed the podium all be it a minute adrift.

Helen Pattinson (Solent Pirates) picked up from last weekend’s podium at the National trophy race in Durham by taking a win in the women’s race. It took Pattinson half a lap to reel in Kara Perryman (Team Montezumas Hargroves Cycles) rider after she had made another quick start. On the second complete lap Tamina Oliver had moved into leading senior lady rider just behind junior Perryman. Last weeks winner Susan Parker (North Hants RC) did not like the course and despite a high position on the early laps she slipped away. Parkers team mate Sara Barber took up the running passing Natasha Reddy (RP Racing) to fill the second place on the podium.

Steven Davies (Hargroves Cycles) made a winning return to Wessex League duties by winning by 61secs in the vet50+ race from Tim Costello (GS Vecchi). Davies took the lead around halfway around the opening lap and was never challenged throughout. Costello had Reading CC rider Gary Barlow for company for a couple of laps but the Sussex based rider soon put distance between them. Dave McMullen (Cotswold Veldrijden) then caught and passed Barlow and at the finish had managed to put a 6secs buffer between each other.

In the vet 40+ race once again Dan Guest (Cotswold Veldrijden) made little of the conditions as he skipped over the slippery course putting time into his fellow riders. On lap one Guest held a lead of 11secs over junior Erin Baker (Team MK) and vet rider Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) and by lap three the lead was best part of one minute. Whilst Doyle and Baker continued to swap places Graham Rogerson (Cotswold Veldrijden) was in a three way battle with junior riders Edward Gronbech (Oxford City RC) and Liam Sewell (Cotswold Veldrijden). The leading places did not change on the run towards the chequered flag did not change despite Will Cooper (Team Montezumas Hargroves Cycles) picking up a place over Baker whilst he pitted for a fresh bike on the final lap.

This week, the Youths were joined by National Trophy high flyers Oliver Stockwell (U16) and Joe Kiely (U14) (Welwyn Wheelers) with the pair having obviously decided to put team hurt on from the off. League regular, Matt Coulson (Palmer Park Velo) lead the group past the pits from the off, with Tom Couzens (Zappi’s CC), Barney Clacy (Eden Veranda) Harry Dridge (Solent Pirates), Aran Martin (Team Corley Cycles), Euan Macleod (Palmer Park Velo), Sam Bishop (Charlotteville CC) leading the rest over the first crest and on towards the initial climb. Stockwell and Kiely attacked moving away from the rest looking as though they may disappear into the distance. But the chase group settled holding station to the lead pair until Kiely’s doors blew off, the effort of trying to stay with his older and stronger team mate proving too much to sustain. Undaunted, Clacy and Coulson stuck to their task breaking away from the chasers reeling in then dropping Kiely. Stockwell controlled from the front taking an excellent win with Clacy second and Coulson third with the pair some 35 seconds adrift of the winner. Kiely held on well for first in the U14 boys with Max Edgington (Solent Pirates) second and Jamie Gostick (Palmer Park Velo) third. Amy Perryman (Solent Pirates) showed great class in taking a comfortable win in the U16 girls being followed home by the duelling U14s Mille Couzens (Zappi’s CC) and Anna Wadsworth ( Beeline Bicycles RT) with Abbie Manley (Solent Pirates) taking 2nd in the U16s and Katie Scott (Cotswold Veldrijden) third. Madeline Grace Cooper (Eden Veranda) was third of the U14 girls.

There were wins for Jed Smithson Hillingdon Slipstreamers and Niamh Murphy Cotswold Veldrijden in the under 12’s and Daniel Phillips Cotswold Veldrijden and Anna Patterson Bicester Millennium CC in the under 10’s races.
