Ben Sumner (Beeline Cycles) made it two from two in the Wessex League comfortably winning the latest round at the Oxford Spire Academy in Cowley. The nearest rider to Ben was Paul Lloyd (Rides on Air) with Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) taking the third step on the podium after winning the earlier combined vets race. The course at the academy had a verity of terrain for the riders to navigate their way around. There was a very technical wooded section, two large football fields and two leg killing climbs. John Scripps, British Cycling development coach, has kindly agreed to lead some Oxfordshire based CX training for youth/junior (14 – 18yrs ) riders. This will be held weekly at Tilsley Park, Abingdon, OX14 1PU at 7pm until 830pm. Starting on Tuesday Oct 1. To supplement John’s session, other Oxfordshire coaches will be available to take younger children (U14) who wish to attend. Following and night of very heavy rain the course which was pan flat around a couple of football pitches and a small wooded copse was waterlogged. The course soon cut up badly during the earlier races as the rain continued but it did ease a little for the start of the senior race. It was very cold which didn’t help riders and the added ditch with six inches of running water was compounded their misery on each lap. Round seven of the league saw the riders and supporters at the Rutherford Appleton Labs on the side of the hill side surrounding the establishment, with the event promoted by Swindon Road Club. After the overnight wind and rain the chalky ground was firm and very fast and despite a small shower during the youth race the top surface wasn’t too slippery, and it was chilly on the exposed hill side. Ben Sumner (Beeline Cycles) won the first round of the Wessex League at Oxonian’s event at Cowley to the west of Oxford. Ben out sprinted Luke Gray (Trek Cross Collective) by a second on the line to win the league opener. The event was held within the ground of the Oxford Spires Academy on terraced football pitches which provided the climbs and a very narrow technical wooded section to the north of the school.
